3 steps you can take to help your

small business overcome the economic crisis

In the face of difficult economic times, you have probably thought about different options to better prepare your business in terms of expenses, increasing your clientele, or finding an edge over your competitors.  The truth is that in order to overcome any storm you need to prepare yourself well and implement an action plan, instead of simply waiting for things to change.

Ask yourself what your plan is to overcome these challenges.  How are you preparing your business to compete?  Have you reconsidered your expense budget?  Are you providing a service or product of value to the public?  And how are you letting potential clients know of the benefits you offer over others in your market? Planning requires discipline and if you want to protect your business you need a plan that looks after your bottom line as well as the needs of your clients.  In this new and challenging economy you need to anticipate changes in order to navigate through these tough times.

During this unstable climate it's not enough to bunker down, you'll need to plan, reinvent yourself and promote your best offers.  You should be differentiating yourself from your competition- Why are you better? What value are you offering?   Turning on your lights and hoping for customers to walk in is not enough.  You need to figure out what you can do every day to help your business weather the storm.

Here are some suggestions to help you be better prepared.

·  Reconsider your services.

What was once your business offer or proposition may not be exactly what the client needs today.  Find a way to fill consumers' needs.  If you're an accountant, a lawyer or a businessman, think of how your services are indispensable to the public and communicate why.  Often, people don't know or understand the scope of work and services you can provide on a regular basis, so they limit their search for highly specialized assistance only as a last resort.  Inform your clients of your multiple specialties and services and you'll be surprised by the results.

·  Adapt your communications.

You're not the only one worried about the current economic crisis and the public is looking for any type of relief.  Adapt your communications to better reach your audience.  Identify and promote specific benefits provided by your services or products.  Let your clients know why you should be their first option.  A strong media plan can help you reach your target audience without incurring in excessive expenses. Strategic use of the internet and social media provide a new and more cost effective tool over traditional advertising.  And never underestimate the power of a well-written press release.  Your piece of specialized news, accompanied with video or photo images help engage your customers and encourage people to share your story.
